While lightning is a powerful and potentially deadly natural phenomenon, the odds of actually being struck by lightning are relatively low. On average, the chance of being struck by lightning in a given year is about 1 in 1,222,000. However, over the course of a lifetime (assuming an average lifespan of 80 years), the odds increase to approximately 1 in 15,300.
